Eines Tages begegnet der Oberschüler Sakuta Azusagawa in der Bücherei einem Mädchen im Bunny-Kostüm names Mai Sakurajima. Es stellt sich heraus, dass sie eine berühmte Schauspielerin und beliebter Kinderstar ist und auf dieselbe Schule geht wie er. Doch trotz ihres Ruhms und aufreizenden Äußeren ist Sakuta der einzige, der Mai sehen und hören kann; aus irgendeinem Grund können die Leute Mai seit ein paar Tagen nicht mehr wahrnehmen und so kam sie in die Bibliothek, um das zu überprüfen. Sakuta stellt sich die Frage, ob das mit dem sogenannten „Pubertätssyndrom“ zusammenhängen könnte, ein mysteriöses Phänomen, über das Gerüchte im Internet kursieren. Er entschließt sich, der Sache auf den Grund zu gehen und verbringt so mehr Zeit mit Mai, um dieses Geheimnis zu lüften. Dabei lernt er sie und ihre Gefühle besser kennen und trifft auch auf andere Mädchen mit dem „Pubertätssyndrom“.
