La storia è ambientata nel villaggio di Saint Petersburg, una cittadina immaginaria del Missouri, durante una lunga estate della seconda metà del secolo XIX. Tom Sawyer è un monello che vive con suo fratello minore Sid, sua zia Polly e sua cugina Mary in una casa sulle rive del Mississippi. La zia, dopo la morte dei loro genitori, ha allevato Tom e Sid con amore, come se fossero figli suoi.
