NBC 台 2012 年秋季新劇《新常態》由著名制片人、已經有兩部熱播美劇（《歡樂合唱團》和《美國恐怖故事》）的瑞恩·墨菲擔任主創。《新常態》為半小時喜劇，講述一對男同夫夫和他們的代孕女住同一屋簷下、迎接和撫養小孩的故事。由賈斯汀·巴薩和安德魯·蘭內爾斯飾演的同志伴侶決定撫養自己的小孩，他們將代孕媽媽鎖定在餐館女侍、負債累累的單親媽媽格羅莉（喬治雅·金 Georgia King 飾）身上，後者懷孕後搬入和他們一起生活，從而給這個另類家庭增添了諸多歡笑和煩惱。宗教團體在開播前曾呼籲抵制，認為該劇扭曲了“正常的家庭價值觀”，但大量調查表明“同志也可以組建家庭”已成為美國民意主流，因此《新常態》所反映的“新常態”還會繼續發展和壯大。 本劇由瑞恩·墨菲和《歡樂合唱團》編劇艾麗·阿德勒共同打造，由二十世紀電視公司負責制作，是 NBC 在 2012 年開發和預訂的第 13 部情景喜劇。
